Activities for a Bahamas Wedding
The shining isles of the Bahamas have much to offer, from the romantic excursions to fun in the sun and rest and relaxation unrivaled anywhere else in the Caribbean. Each resort destination and cruise line will typically operate its own “cay”, or island; each resort will have its own activities and perks on offer, so it can be important to do your research before picking the right one! From the Jukanoo street carnival held the end of Christmas and New Year’s day with wild African rhythms and costumes, to visiting local rum factories and dancing the night away to Calypso and Soca music, there’s plenty to do! Dip your toes in water that is 80 degrees all year long, and swim along coral reefs that are as colorful as the locals, the Bahamas is a fantastic place to celebrate you special day and stay for your honeymoon!
Go Shopping!
Luxury goods in the Bahamian Islands are a bit of a rarity, but you can visit the “Straw Markets” to see local handicrafts and also hire services like romantic glass bottom boat tours and diving equipment to explore the many natural coral reefs in the Bahamas. Beware of any one selling Cuban cigars; they’re often fakes and are illegal, no matter what the salesperson promises. One great thing to buy while in the Bahamas is rum, especially on factory tours (the Bacardi factory tour is just south of Nassau). These allow you to taste a variety of rums and learn how they’re made, and then you can visit the company store and buy rum on your way out. These can be a great thing to bring back as a keepsake from your beach wedding!
Enjoy the Sun
One of the biggest draws of the Bahamas is its abundance of sunshine, so take full advantage of it! With the best beaches in the Caribbean, it’s a great place to sunbathe and get in the water. The sands themselves range from bleached white to a pretty pink (from an overabundance of brine and shells over the years) and even pebble beaches. One great thing about these beaches is that there are always lush palm trees to provide shade, so you can spend an entire day outside in comfort.
If you’re looking for a more active honeymoon, the calm Bahamian seas lend themselves to all kinds of watersports including kite surfing and diving, swimming with dolphins (known as dolphin excursions by those who offer it) and even fishing and boat tours! Boat tours can take you around the different islands and some will be diving or snorkeling tours where you can get a quick lesson with equipment included with the price of the tour. Don’t be afraid to island hop on one of the many planes available for a nominal fee so you can enjoy more than just a single island a day; each island has its own special views and activities to offer!
There’s so much to see in the Bahamas, check out our nightlife and dining tabs to learn more and see what else the Bahamas has to offer you for your destination wedding!
Dining in the Bahamas
Dining in the Bahamas is an experience all its own with exotic seafood, deep African influences as well as fried delicacies to boot! One thing anyone should try when you’re in the Bahamas for your beach wedding or resort wedding is “Conch”. Conch is a deep fried mollusk seasoned with lemon and Caribbean spices that melts in your mouth and served on a bed of rice and peas. You can find standard American fare like Burger King and KFC everywhere, but be sure to check out local restaurants along the beach that serve FRESH food and give you the complete Bahamian experience.
Try the Fish Fry
When you’re wandering around the Bahamas and looking for a great meal that’s authentic as well as affordable, you should try the Fish Fry. The Fish Fry is a section of local restaurants and nightclubs that serve fantastic food by day, and turn into a happening nightlife scene by night. During the month of June you’ll find the best selection of seafood since it’s harvest season; the rest of the year the food is still great, but the selection won’t be as awesome as it is during June (especially when you’re trying to feed a group after you destination wedding!).
Local Delights
In Nassau there are two restaurants that you have to try: The Shoal Restaurant and Lounge and Café Matisse. The Shoal Restaurant serves some wicked barbequed fish and delicious desserts at ten to twenty bucks a plate each. The Café Matisse is a fusion restaurant of Creole and Italian cuisine using only fresh local ingredients; be careful though as this is a more upscale restaurant that requires fancy/evening dress and reservations in advance, it’s well worth it though.
In Long Island, see Gary’s Conch Bar near Dean’s blue hole and eat fresh Conch. Bimini is a foodie heaven with the Sabaro at the Bimini Bay Resort; here you can enjoy fine dining for breakfast and dinner. The Bimini Big Game Resort and Marina has fantastic seafood, and the Bimini Beach Club Restaurant has the best sushi in the Caribbean, served fresh daily. The Chat and Chill on Exuma Island has garlic coleslaw and a great fried chicken right on the beach.
There are so many different restaurants in the Bahamas it would be pointless to try and list them all; the best way to find a good restaurant is to go out and explore on your own. A beautiful wedding deserves a beautiful meal, and there are a lot of restaurants that are willing to cater your destination wedding if you plan ahead. Try to skip the imported food in favor of locally sourced foods with authentic flavors that will help you create memories that will last you a lifetime!
One great thing about the seaside cafes is that at night they transform from grills and restaurants into glittering nightlife spots! If you come for an early dinner you can enjoy a leisurely march towards the party scene without worrying about the restaurants trying to rush you out. So get out there and explore and find your slice of paradise!
Bahamas Nightlife
Nightlife in the Bahamas is truly unique in the fact that you won’t have to deal with the usual bar pub scene and cheap tiki torches (though there is some of that in a few areas). Here you’ll find one of the crown jewels of the Caribbean with its fantastic gambling facilities. You can also find many sports bars and Irish pubs (Guinness is exceedingly popular throughout the island, with many British and Scottish expats living here) that give you a relaxed Bahamas experience without any of the pretention that you might find in comparable establishments on other Caribbean islands. Most casinos also have Vegas style shows that run every night, so be sure to check them out if gambling isn’t your idea of fun or if you’re just tired of doing the money dance!
Casinos and Shows
There are four main casinos in the Bahamas, but on only two of the main islands: Grand Bahama and New Providence. Both are mainstays when it comes to destination wedding locations, so you’re never far from entertainment after your wedding or the night before.
• Paradise Island has the Le Cabaret Theatre with many shows that you can enjoy almost every night, especially at the height of tourist season. • Charlie’s in Nassau is open during the weekend, with an old world sophistication that you would find in the finest casinos of Monte Carlo. • The Rainforest Theater, also in Nassau, has live theater every night with dinner thrown in with the price of your ticket. Enjoy haut cuisine while being entertained like nowhere else in the Bahamas! Tourists do come in on Tuesdays and Saturdays, so you need to make reservations to reserve your spot.
Nightclubs and Bars
The nightlife outside of the casinos is rich; surrounding each major casino you’ll find a huge variety of brightly colored bars with delicious drinks and Calypso music where you can dance the night away. Some of the more popular spots are:
• Club Waterloo in Nassau is located in a fabulous mansion near the beach and boasts a selection of club music, live entertainment and a fun atmosphere that’s laid back and ideal for dancing with its five bars and many dance floors. • The Pure Nightlife Club is a VIP lounge that serves champagne by the table and a great ambience to enjoy! • Dragons on Paradise Island is filled with heat, fantastic drink deals and is a great place to blow off the night before or the night after your wedding.
When you’re planning your destination wedding, you know you have to make sure you find a place that’s both beautiful as well as fun for everyone in your wedding party. Most clubs are near wedding locations, so if you’re wed at sunset you can easily leave your beach wedding and go and dance the night away! If you are looking for a great place to eat after a show or a night in the casino, check out our dining tab to learn more.
